"I'm Ready" Preparation Checklist

Few journeys are successful without a roadmap. As you are getting ready for the "big day" of your surgery, there are a lot of things to remember. The checklist below is the "roadmap" of things to do and plan to help you prepare for your LAP-BAND® System procedure.

Prepare Mentally and Emotionally

I understand the LAP-BAND® System procedure. I have viewed the EmmiPrepTM online education program and/or read the LAP-BAND® System Information for Patients booklet with informed consent.
I can commit to the changes in my lifestyle, such as the new exercise and diet program, and continuous follow up with my surgeon.
I discussed LAP-BAND® System surgery with my family and/or friend(s).
I know where to get the information and support I need for this journey.

Meet with Specialists

Initial meetings with LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding surgeon

I have discussed my weight loss history and options specific to my individual case.
I have all my questions about my surgeon, the procedure, and post-surgery support provided by my surgeon answered to my satisfaction.
I understand the advantages, disadvantages, risks, and benefits and am ready for my new life with the LAP-BAND® System.

Follow-up meetings with nutritionist/dietician

I understand the dietary requirements before and after surgery.
I have a list of healthy food choices and shopping list. At home, for the first few days after surgery I will have: the pain medication prescribed by my doctor, a supply of ice chips for sipping, clear broth or soup, skim milk, fruit juice, no-sugar-added popsicles. Click here for some recommended food choices.

Pre-surgical meeting with anesthetist and surgeon

I have discussed my entire medical history with the anesthetist, and have had all my specific questions regarding the day of surgery answered to my satisfaction.
I will not eat or drink anything after midnight the day before surgery.
I have stopped smoking.
I will be accompanied by a family member or friend, to and from the hospital. If I am released the same day, I will take the following things with me to the hospital: comfortable, easy-waisted clothes, such as soft track suits, low shoes such as Velcro sneakers, a small, soft pillow to rest on my stomach on the ride home to soften the seatbelt.
