Kerry 's Story

My parents both had weight loss surgery before I did, but I wasn't keen on the idea. I was (and still am) a huge believer that when someone has been compulsively overeating their whole lives, the healing process must be more than just physical, but psychological and spiritual. But I also knew that I couldn't do it alone. I had tried every diet and healthy eating regimen you could imagine, but none of those took away this constant hunger that I had (both physical and mental) even after making healthy food choices.

I was 305 pounds and had lost all hope that things would ever be different. I embraced myself, even in all of my obesity, because I knew that I would always be that way. Once I realized that LAP-BAND® surgery could really make my dream to be healthy a reality, I couldn't say no. I did all of the pre-op tests and within a month I was approved.

I've had to reverse years of eating too fast and too much and making mediocre food choices. I take time every single day to take care of myself. I never thought I could have this much energy. I thrill at my vitality. I can run. I can climb up stairs without losing my breath. I can walk into a room and know that I don't stand out as a morbidly obese woman. I don't have to ask for an XXL when people are handing out t-shirts (I'm a size M/L). I can shop in clothing stores that I never even really knew existed because they sell normal sizes.

One of my most triumphant moments was this past year climbing to the top of a mountain. I looked at the mountain, knew that I could probably barely hike up it, and then ended up being able to climb all the way to the top. The things that this slimmer body can do never cease to amaze me.

Most freeing of all, I no longer define myself by my obesity. I no longer embrace the obese Kerry because that is not who I am. I've been able to dig so much deeper into myself and see that there is a Kerry that exists independent of how much I weigh.

My journey has not been easy. I've had to learn to eat slowly. I've had to make sure to stay hydrated, eat enough protein, get enough sleep, and keep in check emotions that drive to me to eat.

Among the most crucial keys to my success has been developing a network of friends, family, and other Lap-Banders to support me in this journey. I still attend weekly support meetings (sometimes even twice a week) to keep me in check, to share my story with others, and to never forget that I need to take things one day at a time.
