If you're a beginner or just getting back to exercise and have decided that a gym is right for you, look for:

  • Recumbent bikes. They support your body without stressing your joints. Treadmills and elliptical machines are also smart beginner equipment.
  • Pool. Pool workouts gently condition the body, using water as resistance.
  • Light free weights. Start with lighter weights and more repetitions.
  • Free trainer sessions. Even one session with a trainer is a great introduction.

If a gym has all of these but is a 30-minute drive from home or work, be realistic about how often you're likely to get there. Then consider sacrificing one of the above for the sake of convenience.
