Coping with "Productive" Burps in Public

Rate This Resource
Everyone has experienced the embarrassment of a public burp. But if you've eaten too much too quickly, you may find that a "productive" burp also brings up food. "You'll feel uncomfortable, as if something's stuck in the opening between your pouch and your stomach. You bring up the last bit that you probably shouldn't have eaten and then feel fine," notes Erin Hurst, RD/LD, a bariatric dietitian from Cincinnati, Ohio, who has been living with a LAP-BAND® System since 2005. If you feel one coming on, simply excuse yourself and make a beeline for the privacy of a restroom. "There's usually time," Hurst notes. "Very few people have urgent situations or find that the food shoots out of their mouth-I've encountered that among my clients only once or twice." To avoid the next one, remember: small pieces of food, thorough chewing, long pauses between bites.
